I know you shouldn't laugh, but I did find it amusing to read how lots of Turkish men in their 40's are signing up to internet language schools trying to find a bride, only these men are different to the average visa-hunter; they're older (in their 40's or 50's) and want a Russian bride!

They say they want one who is very beautiful, fertile and good at housekeeping. Oh, and they're quite excited at the prospect that they won't need to pay a dowry, like they do for a Turkish bride. Never ones to miss out on a deal are they?! Of course, many Turks retire when they're in their 40's, so I suppose they can't be arsed to get to the UK and do what all the younger rats do - try and make their fortune! No, they'd be happy to sit on their hosed-down bottoms in the coffee houses, while their beautiful young Russian brides stay at home scrubbing behind the fridge and cooking! They're having a laugh! Those Russian women wouldn't touch them with a bargepole! I've seen lots of Russian women out in Turkey, and they're usually incredibly beautiful! Tall, slim, striking with high cheekbones, large ice-blue almond-shaped eyes........REALLY beautiful women! No wonder the Turks are all trying to nab one! But do they seriously think a woman who looks like a supermodel would entertain a bandy-legged, pot-bellied, penniless nose-snorter who sits around all day drinking tea and Raki?! Ha ha! You have to hand it to them - they don't half try their luck!

    Oh, here's the link.....

    Yeah Yvette,

And they don't have to exchange their Beko fridges and other white goods for a Russian bride - they can get to keep them! Plus their linens, dishcloths and doily covers too! Bargain!

How strange...I went to one of my local colleges today because my husband and I had an appointment to discuss getting him enrolled on a course to learn English. As my husband's level of English is pretty much non-existent (pre-entry) of course I went along to translate. The woman was shocked to hear us conversing in Turkish and said that it was RARE to see this as she has many foreigners coming in with their wives and they are both communicating with a bit of sign language and basic English etc. I was shocked. But then she went on to say she has a Lithuanian at the moment that is "DESPERATE to find an English girlfriend" to help him with his English. I had to laugh. It amazes me how these people survive in a country where they can't speak the language and have nobody else to speak it for them. Having said that my friend is Turkish and her parents have lived in London for 40 years and her father STILL does not speak English!!!!!

    Hi Electra,

I think a lot of Turkish couples (including other nationalities) who come and settle over here often mix with other Turks, and because many of them don't integrate with Brits their English language skills are pretty abysmal. That's relatively common.

But when a single male comes over to marry a British woman it's a different thing altogether. You have to wonder how the couple ever had a conversation at all, before getting together and marrying! They can't know anything about each other, really. If they have anything in common, similar likes/dislikes/beliefs.....oh, it's absolutely ridiculous! I would go stir crazy if I couldn't have a decent conversation with Ertie - I'd go mad with boredom - and so would he.

You may as well be married to a blow-up doll. Duh!

    Hi Porkchop,

Even NORMAL relationships where the couple meet in the flesh and are immediately attracted to each other can often fail. Finding someone on the Internet has an even worse failure rate - especially when the two come from different countries, have different cultures, and different religions. And find it hard to communicate!

On top of that, ANY Turk (and this goes for all men from countries where they can't travel without a visa) any Turk who pursues a woman who lives over 2000 miles away (and he can't travel to meet without a visa) has ulterior motives. What normal, healthy, hot-blooded man has to chase a woman he can't even touch? Why can't he meet a woman where he lives?! There are plenty of beautiful, westernised young Turkish women about!

    It's so obvious it's ridiculous!

I know that there are plenty of rats who work in resorts, but you have much more chance of meeting a decent man in a resort - one who is genuinely attracted to you - than some strange man fishing on the Internet in a country he can't visit without a visa! Why would any man do that? Even on a language site? Healthy young men have high sex drives; they want someone who lives local. And when they do eventually hook a gullible they always, always, always end up moving to the UK! Funny that isn't it?

My husband and I speak to each other in Turkish and rarely have a problem understanding each other but if we do, it is the most frustrating thing in the world. Luckily I have plenty of Turkish people around me (many born and brought up here in the UK) who are always happy to translate if necessary. I couldn't imagine not having that.

Having said that, it is odd that the things we often miscommunicate are simple things. When we discuss something serious, we NEVER have issues understanding each other...I really don't know why?!

I would love to speak turkish but find it difficult really, can speak a bit but only the usual holiday lingo. How long did it take you speak it electradiva? Did you take classes or just pick it up from hubb?

I picked it up from books and the internets although admittedly my Turkish is not very good. I wish I had gone to classes and learnt properly - my grammar is atrocious!

On the whole it took me a couple of years to get to where I am now but I am surrounded by Turkish a lot and have a lot of Turkish friends which does make it easier.

    Hi Electra,

Oh I don't think grammar is that important, unless you want to read and write Turkish. As long as you can make yourself understood in a conversation, and know what they're syting, that's all that matters really. Don't forget, Turks themselves often use different terminology and words to what's taught in language books - just as English people do. Then you have all the slang words and so on....

I don't think you can beat living in a country, or as you say, being surrounded by Turkish-speaking people, to really pick the lingo up and understand it. You don't realise how much you pick up by just hearing the sounds - but you do over time. I've never tried to learn Turkish - except for the usual tourist phrases -probably because Ertie spoke very good English when I first met him, so we always spoke in English. Even when I lived out in Turkey I only knew the very basics, but since he's been doing the fruit and we're in contact with Turkey almost every day my Turkish has come along - even without trying! And I realise (now I'm thinking about it) that when I read something written in Turkish the Turkish pronunciation goes straight in my head (if that makes sense) For example, the word 'sagol' - I would never read it and hear it as 'saggol'. Actually, I wonder if I'm a bit of a linguist?

What I have seen there are many beautiful Turkish women in Turkey so probably most Turkish guys in holiday resorts and the internet are probably after the obvious and want both. Nice Turkish girl to marry and a western women for other stuff. However, there are probably sucess stories out there as well.

As for Russian women well yes some are beautiful but there are beautiful and ugly people all over the world. The reason why the Turkish men go for Russian women is because they are so desparate to get out of their country and think a Turkish man is a good catch, no matter what his age.

I watched a TV programme recently and they even have schools in Russia showing Russian women how to be the perfect wife etc and to submissive and be everything and do everything to please her husband

    How sad they were.

    Hi Mel,

It's normal to want a partner similar to yourself; someone whose been brought up in the same culture, speaks the same language, and lives locally. Makes sense doesn't it?

As you rightly say, there's thousands of very beautiful Turkish girls, especially in the cities (Istanbul, Izmir etc) where they're much more Westernised, and dress fashionably etc. And those type of Turkish girls are no pushovers either! They're not like your uneducated village wife from far-flung Eastern Turkey. Ertie's relatives (cousins etc) are very glamorous. I've met 3 of them - one who lives in Antalya who flies over to Cyprus every month to visit the casinos...she's divorced, comfortably off, and wears all the latest fashions and expensive make-up, Dior etc.....his other cousin lives in America - she's married to an American she met in Izmir when he was working there in the army for NATO..and the other cousin who I met just last year came over with her new husband to go travelling round Europe and England for a 3 month honeymoon - and she is really stunning and modern.

So when I hear about the way some women talk about Turkish women as being almost insignificant - they're very wrong. Not all Turkish women are little village wife types at all! Only the ones who have been brought up in that kind of lifestyle are like that.

Most Turkish men who target Western women do so for a visa. Plain and simple. I know that a lot of them like Russian women - I think they believe them to be sexy and good housewives. Oh, the nerve of them! A lot of Turkish men like a village-type wife, because she's low maintenance, cooks well, does all the work, and keeps quiet. She knows her place. The more educated and Western style men go after the educated Western style Turkish women - who are usually high maintenance. Likewise, beautiful, educated Turkish women from good backgrounds marry Turkish men of a similar status. Just like in the UK, we usually mix in our own same social circles, so that's why most people usually marry someone similar to themselves. You'll get the odd exception (where a couple accidentally meet, say, on their travels) but as the old saying goes: Birds of a feather flock together.

    Hello Ladies

I have mixed views on all of this. I know there are love cheats who are notorious in Turkey but however bad they are they must meet a woman one day who they are attracted to and start to fall inlove with them. Most young chaps like to sow their oats before getting hitched and I think it's very wrong, if a young girl behaved that way she would be frowned upon, it's all very unfair in that respect. I do think girls and women fall in love more easy and wear their heart on their sleeve and become attached to a chap when they enter into a physical relationship, even if it's only a physical thing to his mind.

It is wrong and cruel to play with a persons feelings and lead them up the garden path, take money from them under false pretences and generally lead them a merry old dance, these type of people who do this, both men and women, display signs usually that all is not well or as it seems. Constant little lies, excuses, not arriving when they say they will are all signs of something wrong. I have always found by looking into a mans eyes if he is sincere, eyes cannot lie.

Wow Strawbs the linguist...perhaps you should open a little "school" that doubles up as a matchmaking business?! lol. At least you'd be able to separate the wheat from the chaff lol.

We have Turkish television as well as English television at home also and I picked up quite a bit from that. I find that my reading and writing is generally better than my speaking but that is because I learnt from books and the internet but I can get by and I have picked up quite a bit of slang too but that is due to being surrounded by Turks and Kurds. Occasionally I can hear accents too but only if they are very broad. My father-in-law has a really strong accent and he is quite difficult to understand at times. I generally find Cypriots easier to understand because they sounds like cockneys speaking Turkish to me ha ha.

    Hey Electra,

I've too noticed that many Turkish Cypriots sound cockney! Innit?

Kurds tend to sound much more guttural, I find, probably because it's Arabic based (I think?)

No-one ever seems to guess where Ertie comes from when they first meet him - a lot of people think he sounds Italian for some reason. To be honest, I don't really notice his accent now, but if I think about it I don't think I wouldn't know where he came from either!

It makes life interesting, though, all these different accents/dialects...........

Innit?! ha ha. It's funny in Hackney and Dalston because a lot of my Turkish friends that have grown up here have also picked up a lot of "street" language and I can never understand what they are going on about. For instance they say, he wanted to chirps me (chat me up). It drives me crazy!

My husband lived in Istanbul for about 15 years and I think he lost a lot of his accent then but I have noticed that it comes out really broad when he goes home still and it stays like that for a few weeks when we get home. I feel sorry for our children because I'm from Essex (probably the worst accent in the UK) and my husband is from the Turkish equivalent so no matter where they are they will sound like crap lol.

Ooooh, you'll have to think of a new name for your children's accent - how about Turkney? There's quite a few variations you could think up!

I don't think the Essex accent is unpleasant at all. I think the most assaulting accent on the ears is Brummie. Actually, forget that. The WORST one I've ever heard is Zoe Salmon's! I never knew who she was until I watched a programme about Low Fat Foods a couple of weeks ago. My God! What an AWFUL voice she has!!!!!! I think she's from Northern Ireland, but her voice - oh - the accent!!! Really GRATING!
