Did anyone watch Joanna Lumley in Greek Odyssey on ITV, last week? I love watching her, especially as her voice, tone, nuances...everything... is identical to my sister-in-law's, so I always sit there in amazement when she's on TV - it's like having my SIL round talking to me
But what really amazed me was when she went to an island close to Athens, and found a small community (about 40 odd) who communicate like birds! They whistle! If you haven't watched it do try and catch it - it's fascinating. These people were actually asking questions (and answering) by whistling like birds! I find anything like that really incredible, and had I not seen it I wouldn't quite believe it! One elderly woman who looked to be about 80-years-old said that the only downside to their 'whistle speech' was having to wear dentures - it's hard to whistle if you have dentures, apparently.
But they have these proper conversations by whistling to each other. One woman did a birdsong thing, and the subtitles said "Are you coming over to meet Joanne and have some tea, Stavros?"
And then you heard a lazy whistle from way off, and the subtitles said:
"Nah. I'm having my tea here"
It's absolutely amazing!
