    Greek Whistlers

Post  Admin on Mon Oct 17, 2011 7:24 pm

Did anyone watch Joanna Lumley in Greek Odyssey on ITV, last week? I love watching her, especially as her voice, tone, nuances...everything... is identical to my sister-in-law's, so I always sit there in amazement when she's on TV - it's like having my SIL round talking to me Exclamation

But what really amazed me was when she went to an island close to Athens, and found a small community (about 40 odd) who communicate like birds! Shocked They whistle! If you haven't watched it do try and catch it - it's fascinating. These people were actually asking questions (and answering) by whistling like birds! Shocked I find anything like that really incredible, and had I not seen it I wouldn't quite believe it! One elderly woman who looked to be about 80-years-old said that the only downside to their 'whistle speech' was having to wear dentures - it's hard to whistle if you have dentures, apparently.

But they have these proper conversations by whistling to each other. One woman did a birdsong thing, and the subtitles said "Are you coming over to meet Joanne and have some tea, Stavros?"

And then you heard a lazy whistle from way off, and the subtitles said:

"Nah. I'm having my tea here"

    It's absolutely amazing!

Hey Strawbs, I thought for a second your post was going to be about Greek men haha! I never saw this programme but I'm definitely going to watch it now you've told us about it. Have you ever been to Greece? I've been a couple of times but much prefer Turkey. That's not because of my Turkish ex, I just feel more at home in Turkey than I did in Greece.

Well, I'm looking forward to watching this recommendation of yours and I'll let you know what I made of it!

Thanks for the reco Strawbs, you're a star.
