Does anyone remember 'Our Tune' on Radio 1? The DJ Simon Bates used to read out a true story to the background music of Romeo & Juliet, that a listener had sent in. I used to love listening to the stories; they were usually about someone's romance (with both happy and sad endings) but sometimes the story could be about something else : family conflict, broken friendships, loss of a family member/friend, love against the odds etc. Or sometimes the story would be about a person's own private troubles ; I remember the story of one man who became suicidal because he started balding!

Simon Bates would read out the story - taking big gulps and pauses here and there - and while some of the stories were uplifting, or sometimes amusing, some stories were heartbreaking. When I used to listen to them, whether at home or in the car, everything would stop and I'd become transfixed! They started each morning just after 11 and went on for about 15 minutes.

Anyway, I thought it would be nice to start an "Our Tune" on here!

It would be lovely hearing a story of yours, and the song that you associate with those times. As you probably know, you can find almost any song on Youtube, and put the link to it on here.

If you don't want to go into the details of your story - you could just put the link up to a song that is special to you - and keep us all guessing!

You can put more than one song up - we all have a few songs that take us back to a certain time or event in our lives.

I have a few songs which I'll post up later...but to get you started, here's a link to the theme tune of Simon Bates 'Our Tune'......

    Hello Strawbs

This is a marvellous thread. I well remember Our Tune and I would listen to it on occasion, I thought it was a super idea and some of the stories had me reaching for my hankie I can tell you. It's quite strange you've brought this subject up, I only finished sorting out my music this week. I will tell you my tune and the story attached to it which makes it so terribly special to me. I need to go back in time to when I first heard this delightful and romantic song and never guessed the meaning it would have for me. I loved the song the first time I heard it and it's one that I would feature on Desert Island Discs, it would be in my bag for sure. It's melodious, romantic and full of passion and meaning. Being an all time favourite of mine I had it on my cassette tape compilation when I took it with me to Turkey. When I met my chap and we started to become serious in that first fortnight the song took on an even more powerful meaning and I was thrilled to the heart when I asked my chap to listen to it and he said he loved it too. When I left him at the airport it felt like that song had been written for us, fate maybe? We had a very tearful goodbye at the airport and once I'd settled into my seat on the plane I was already planning ahead to my next trip, I love making lists and plans. I felt terribly upset without my chap on that lonely flight home but it cheered me up immensely when I played that song on my cassette player (I've transferred them all now to CD and ipod) I feel a trifle embarrassed to say I played the song repeatedly, non stop, over and over again throughout the whole flight while I thought about my chap and went over and over in my head all the times we'd shared as I listen to the song. I feel a little embarrassed because I remember the passenger sat next to me kept glancing at me as I swayed my head to the music, the melody and rhythm always gets you swaying, and I get carried away with music and I always smile while listening and day dreaming.

My chap hasn't popped the question yet but it's on the cards and I even told him if we got married this would be our wedding dance tune and he agreed it would be lovely to dance to on such a special occasion. The words fit perfectly to our love story (I would never have guessed back then when I first heard it the significance it would have for me) and I am thrilled to find the songs on youtube. I have all ready sent a link to my chap, I know he will be thrilled he loves the song so much. The special and unusual thing is that the singer was on the short side like my chap and had dark hair like him too. It's a marvellous video and when you watch it to the end the last picture of the actor looks facially very much like my chap and there's a lady at the end who has the same hairstyle as me. It's incredible.

Here ladies is Our Song. I hope you enjoy it as much as I and my chap do.

    Hi Girls

I think Tarkan is very sexy too, went and saw him at Wembley in April 2008, gosh 3 years ago now, how time flies, he was brilliant and so so sexy in the flesh. Must take a cold shower now.

One of my favourite songs is Bu Aksam Olurum which is such a powerful love song and going back about 8-10 years it was playing everywhere you went in Marmaris. Due to the fact that it is such a very sad song, the Turkish Government decided to ban it initially as so many Turks were commiting suicide to the song. Really cannot understand why they decided to do this en masse, but they did, so it was banned.

Anyway, typical of Turkish laws, they decided the video could still be played but they adjusted the ending to it, the violen now goes a cropper off the balcony instead of the man. This song brings back so many powerful memories, of course, I didnt understand a word of it until I watched it on YouTube and read the English subtitles. I used to think he was saying 'do your room, do your room', so I used to say to my teenage daughter at the time, go on, do your bloody bedroom its a mess!.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it as much as I did and still do.

    Sunday,
We're a bit past all the soppy "our tune" stuff now but there were a couple of Turkish songs many moons ago that we used to get a bit melancholy to just as we were about to be parted:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK8pEEEJbYM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHbyxy79Ah0

And not an "our tune" but this song is the song that reminds me most of all of my very first trip to Turkey in 1996:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGx4hghamKE

I used to be able to sing along to all of these songs word for word without ever being able to speak or understand more than about 10 words of Turkish lol!! I actually still quite like all of them, they're rather tuneful. The songs I can't bear are with the arabesque ones with the men screeching - makes my ears bleed!!!

You must have been going to Turkey at around the same time as me. I can remember all the songs you mention being played in the clubs there. I used to love the Diana King "Shy Guy" one too (where's the cheesy emoticon?) and these three in particular take me right back to Altinkum 1996:

    Hello Ladies

I am so pleased you enjoyed our song, I enjoyed sharing it with you all. Your songs are lovely too although I don't understand Turkish very well, the tunes and melody are very catchy and I will certainly listen to them again. I have some more special songs that I'd like to share with you all but I will have to do it later now if that is all right. I hope you all have a really super day.

Well me and my husband don't have a song together really. On our wedding day, I went through a load of songs, picked my top 4 and translated the words to Turkish and then played them to my husband for him to make the final decision. So our wedding dance was to this song:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-skFgrV59A

This song reminds me of my husband because it is filmed around Taksim, Istanbul where we met and my husband used to have this on his brain and be humming it a lot when we met

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gViaOYgV8yI

and finally, this one because my husband is in it! (although a long time before we met)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxtptcQ94XQ

By the way Ruby, I went to that Tarkan concert at Wembley too - it was brilliant. I got quite drunk and was singing and dancing along Smile

    Thursday,
As if you don't already know...I'm sure you've met up with him and noted them all down and that is probably why he doesn't like me coming on these forums (in case I catch him out!) Smile Actually he does have quite muscular thighs - in fact we have a problem finding trousers because they are all too tight for him. This is the reason that he tells me he likes to wear those stupid baggy jeans that make him look like a teenager.

It'll be more difficult for you both to have your clandestine meetings now because he is moving jobs so he will be closer to home. Where there's a will there's a way though... Wink

I must get on now - got some things to do and then want to get out in the garden and make the most of this summer we are having. toodlepip x

    Friday,
Ooooh Electra, and your husband is TALL and broad too! Not like some of these turtle-weeds we see in succession on these sites!

And there's nothing worse than a man with thin weedy legs!

I'm not keen on men with bouffants, either. I think it looks very feminine - a bouffant. I remember seeing a picture of a Turkish man getting married over here - and he had a bouffant. But I think he backcombed it to hide his bald patch; still looked feminine though. Mind you, he may have backcombed his hair to distract from his eyes that almost met in the middle. He wasn't boss-eyed, but if you looked at him............you'd go boss-eyed!

Back to your hunk. I was most upset to learn that he is moving jobs - this makes things extremely difficult for me! I have been making a pilgrimage every day to where your husband works (PLEASE DO NOT TELL HIM!) just to get a glimpse of him . This all started after you very unkindly removed his picture, and I've been trying to get a snap of him ever since. But the one time I caught him in view he spotted me - and ran in the opposite direction! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! But I always look on the bright side, and when I discover his new place of work (I know you will tell me - pretty please?) I may get a better opportunity to snap him. Oh, before I forget, now the lovely weather is here could you send him to work in shorts? Would he do that? What do you think? If possible, black shorts, not too tight, but not baggy, either, and mid thigh would be ideal. No socks. Please. Oh go on, Electra. I know you like me really. Think of it as a kind of charity. Hmm?
