Wood Burning and the smell of Autumn Empty Wood Burning and the smell of Autumn

Post  ruby Fri Oct 14, 2011 6:57 am

Earlier this evening whilst out walking I smelt wood burning, the smell of musty dead leaves crunching under my feet like crispy cornflakes and a whiff of blackberries. Now that is a smell I would like to bottle as Autumn has definitely arrived. Judith, you can now officially get out your woollie jumpers as you said you were out of sync when we had the warm weather a couple of weeks ago.

It reminded me of a time when I used to live in a property which was heated by a traditional log burner and in the lounge was a coal fire. Now these are appealing if someone else has to saw the wood, hump the coal, empty and clean the grate then kick start the fires, but when you are solely responsible for these chores I can assure you that it was sheer hell. Can you imagine me sawing wood? Laughing Well I did, but at least it was on an electric saw, but I hated it. Rolling Eyes After working all day having to come back home and start lighting a wood burner and a coal fire in the depth of winter was no joy. Also I would often forget to keep reloading the wood into the log burner. drunken

Tell you what, when people have romantic ideas of sitting in front of a real fire with a glass of wine I have to laugh, now I just love to turn a switch on the wall and the central heating comes on - BLISS flower

Anyone else have a Log Burner/Coal Fire?

Hey Ruby, that's a lovely scene you described there, did you live in the countryside? Like you I love the countryside and do some hiking when the weather is good, and this weekend looks like it may be good walking weather. Do you go hiking? I love it when the weather is good in the autumn and love to take shots of leaves/trees and so on.

I can't see you sawing and chopping logs up, you look so delicate in your photo. It's like Strawbs piloting a plane, I can't imagine it, she looks too feminine. Looks can be very deceptive it appears.

    Hi Richard

You say 'I can't see you sawing and chopping logs up, you look so delicate in your photo', I had no option but to saw up logs except to freeze Very Happy I used to perform this task on a Sunday, I would have to hype myself up for it then get outdoors and switch on the electric saw, gosh it made such a noise with the big saw edge blade revolving at high speed, in fact I was a bit suspect that the blade would dislodge itself and cut me in half, so I used to stand to the side of it whilst feeding the logs and wood through it, how I hated that job.

Now its just wonderful to turn a switch and the central heating kicks in. Bliss I love you

Yes I live in a fairly rural area with lots of beautiful walks, I live quite near to the River Severn and its so lovely this time of the year to walk beside the river taking in all the wonderful colours of the trees, stopping off now and again to chat to the local fishermen sitting on the banks of the river, then browsing around the village shops with their quaint little trinkets for sale and home made preserves.

The weather was really lovely this afternoon, so hope your prediction of a nice weekend proves to be correct.

    Ruby
