Şımarık Kiss Kiss Empty Şımarık Kiss Kiss

It amazes me that Tarkan's 'Kiss Kiss' song is still so popular in Turkey after its release in 1997. The MC at the venue I go to in Icmeler gets on his microphone and says 'cam on ever re baddy put your hands together for kiss kiss song', then as quick as a flash you have a group of wobbling overweight women who have over indulged in Efes line up and start repeating the hand gestgures and hip movements of this song without having a clue what the song means. The song is actually called Şımarık which means 'spoiled', it contents explain how young people act now blowing bubble gum in your face, that their fathers would totally disapprove of such behaviour and their actions are like snakes coming out of the ground. Holly Valance confused the issue by recording a cover version of the song called Kiss Kiss. I love Tarkan but this song has long past its sell by date.

Another resort song which really pisses me off it Big Box Small Box, again you have the usual River Dance repertoire of balinas standing in a line doing the actions to this nonsense. WTF is Big Box Small Box all about?

Oh and if I am called yabanci or yenge just one more time I think I will scream. Yabanci equals alien and is so annoying to hear. I really dont know why Turkish people bother naming anyone, they are hardly ever called by their first name its all down to hierarchy i.e. Abi, Abla, Yenge, Taze, Amca (I have to watch the Amca one when with my grandchildren as its so close to Amcik, so just incase I make a mistake I always tell my grandchildren to call their amca 'uncle', could just imagine his face if I said amcik Laughing )

Think I am Turkeyed out, I am still talking half Turkish half English and need to adjust my brain into 'normal mode' instead of 'bullshit mode'.

Oh how wonderful it is to be back to normal life in the UK.

    Hi Ruby,

Gosh, I can't believe they're still churning out Kiss Kiss! Doesn't surprise me, though. When Turks know they're onto a good thing they'll spin it out for as long as possible - and to be honest - Kiss Kiss is a catchy tune. But it must sound tired by now, especially when you've heard it 1,894,634 times Exclamation I wonder what the barmen do when it comes on - again. They must just switch off. I suppose it's become the Turkish equivalent of the Birdie Song, and I can just see some of those giant wobblies trying to dance all sexily to it! Embarassed

Talking of food - I suppose they're still doing the Steak Diane, Pepper Steak circa 1970's in Marmaris and Icmeler? They did when I visted there - and all the restaurants did it in Hisaronu, too. Nothing wrong in steak, of course - I sometimes indulged and enjoyed it very much - but it just seemed so 70's! Prawn Cocktail, Steak Diane and Lemon Cheesecake. All very nice - but not very adventurous. I remember my first trip to a restaurant with my friend (we were Turkey virgins) and when we sat down and looked at the menu we both remarked at exactly the same time how retro it was! lol It was like reading the menu of the Angus Steak House 1979 - which even THEN I thought was a bit chain restaurantish - which it was. I swear a waiter from there rushed back to Turkey and told everyone that Brits loved to eat Steak Diane and Pepper Steak - and they're still spinning it out.

Actually, I've just jogged my own memory! I remember meeting a Turkish man (he seemed a man to me, then - he was about 22 lol) in some club in London, and he asked me (in total seriousness) if I fancied going with him - in his car - to Turkey 'next week'! affraid He was deadly serious, but of course, I turned the offer down. Thank you very much. But I bet it was BEAUTIFUL back then! He told me it was more beautiful than anywhere (this was before mass tourism, of course) and he was ever so friendly - he seemed to think it was perfectly normal to invite a girl you've only just met and take them to Turkey by car!lol I thought he was just over-keen, but I now realise he was just being typically Turkish.

Sorry, I've hijacked your post, Ruby. I'm always doing that. Embarassed

On to the 'yabanci' word. Ertie told me that the word 'yabanci' is not a flattering term at all - it's slightly derogatory. I know I've seen a lot of women on various sites call themselves a yabanci, and I wonder if they realise it's actually an insulting term? Suspect It's easy to pronounce, though, so maybe that's why they call themselves one!

it doesn't surprise me they are still playing simarik all the time as they know they will get all the women up dancing.

I used to like it when it first came on but I wouldn't dare play it at home now, my husband would freak out and break the cd he hates it! I guess hearing it night after night and watching stupid people dance to it night after night after night for years in the bars he worked in would make anyone freak out.

I remember big box, little box too, I don't know where that comes from, although I did them doing it on Bob the Builder not long ago - lol

Yenge doesn't bother me so much, I think I just got used to it but I would be offended if someone called me yabanci. I reckon the girls who happily call themselves yabanci just do it because they think they are clever knowing some Turkish!
