This is all it said:
"My Hubby and I are off to Turkey in just over a week (for those who don't know, we're the ones who met in the chatroom of English Girlfriends of Turkish Men after we hung around in there every night for a year. I still swear it was fate that we met!!) Anyway, we're visiting his family in Darica (Kocaeli area, nr Istanbul), though I won't be seeing hubby's dad (AHEM!!) then we're off to Cesme.
Looking forward to exploring an area we haven't been to before, even though it's STILL Turkey. But I'm a Kebabist, see, and so far I've holidayed in Icmeler, Side, Ovacik and we even had our honeymoon in Stinky Tinky! Oz pushed the boat out there he did! Aaw he is soo generous!
I wouldn't swap having Oz here for going back to long distance (not for anything!), but I do sort of miss the days when I used to get to go to Turkey a few times a year! Oooops, I forgot! I only did long distance with Oz for about 6 months - it must have just seemed longer! Haha! But I did fly over 3 times to get to know him - twice to Istanbul where we stayed in a nice (but clean) back street hotel (AHEM!!) and the third time to Ovacik - where he proposed to me in his sleep! Amazingly enough, he'd already bought the engagement ring - it's only a plain gold ring - but who wants diamonds, eh?! Not me! In fact, had Oz bought me a brilliant sparkling diamond I would have made him take it back! Waste of money! All precious jewels are a waste of money as far as I'm concerned (and I am not jealous of women who have big ROCKS! Grrrrrrrrr!) I think diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds are ugly - they're not my cup of tea! I'm a plain band girl, me!
Oh, I've gone on a bit there....I nearly forgot to add that I volunteered at work to go to Ankara for a 4 weeks; this was 3 months into my cyber relationship with my cheekie chappie (now a Hubby) So that was handy - it was so easy and cheap to meet up. Oz was very pleased about that; it made things so easy for him. Cheekie sod!
All those trips to see him.......I don't know how I afforded it either! Though some of it did go on a credit card occasionally..... not good really, but when Oz came over there were 2 incomes to pay it off - well, after he eventually got a job 6 months later. Of course, even though Oz was a Turkish engineer I couldn't expect him to pay for my trips to go and visit him! He didn't earn much money, you see, even though he was an engineer. Did you hear that? He was (and is) an ENGINEER!!! He's not a Civil/Flight or Marine Engineer - but he's still an ENGINEER!!! But a badly paid one (I think?) Terrible isn't it! So he couldn't pay for my flights (even though they were dead cheap flights) and it took me about one year to pay that credit card bill off for those THREE trips to see him : twice to Istanbul and one holiday to Ovacik.. Hang on.......I must have spent MORE than £100 approx for each of those 3 flights if it took a YEAR and TWO salaries to pay it off! Gosh! Oh, of course, I just remembered.........even though it was ME that flew over to Turkey to see HIM - I STILL HAD TO PAY FOR MY HOLIDAY!! Gosh, I hear you say! Why didn't my chekie chappie engineer pay?! Well, I'm not sure how much he was earning (but I don't think it was much) and when he used to get his little purse out of his pocket - the one he kept his coins in - I didn't like to ask how much he had in there. I still don't, actually! I don't know how much money he's got in his bank account, but he is VERY CAREFUL with his money - and he makes sure waiters don't get a PENNY too much in TIPS! He once scolded me for leaving 10 pence TIP too much on a saucer, so he swiftly picked it up and put in his little clasped purse, before the waiter had a chance to collect it. He's a cheeky sod my Hubby is!
Back to when I used to go over to Turkey more than just ONCE.A.YEAR..... I think when I used to go over there, the flights were definitely cheaper. I used to pay around £109 per flight - sometimes you could pick up a bargain of £79. These days it's nearer £200, and all the extras added on. Not that we splash out mind you. Oz will NOT buy any drinkies on our cheap charter flight, but I always pick up a small bottle of pop once we're airside, and I swig that from my bag (AHEM!!) It's funny really, cos even though Oz won't spend a penny more than he really needs to, and we always go cheap (airline/hotel etc) I sometimes dress up Barbara Cartland style for the flight (wearing full slap - thick green eyeshadow, thick clumpy mascara, thick panstick, thick rouge etc) and I have a nice sequinned top which looks flashy (makes up for no diamonds) and with me beret and feather boa I look the cat's whiskers I do! I think it's an event flying to Turkey once a year, so I like to get made up for it, and as it's only once a year on a cheap charter I am going to surprise Hubby and book us the VIP lounge in Manchester! Whoop whoop! Of course, it's not the proper VIP lounge, and it's not the First Class Passenger lounge - but who would want to fly first class, anyway? Not me! I'm happy to go with the plebs and play at being a VIP in the £15-a-go lounge .... oooh, I come over all unnecessary when I walk in there! And do you know what Hubby does? He fills up his little flask with drinkie-poohs from the bar! Cheekie chappie! And we can swig that on the plane! Hehehehehe.
But I miss the old days (4/5 years ago - SUCH a long time!)... then it was so much cheaper over there....... 2 million lira for a soft drink (80p), you didn't have to worry about the price of meals (or rather, I didn't) and handbags and clothes were so cheap that you used to take over a half empty case and buy it all over there. It's a bit different now! If the prices then were like what they are now, no way would I have been able to have bought meself a Turkish Hubby! Even one with cheap tastes like Oz. A few people have asked why a cheekie engineer couldn't afford to splash out a bit, but Oz didn't earn that much in Istanbul. It's not England you know! Besides, he likes to economise, economise, economise - and he loves keeping his money in his bank account. He's a squirrel. Sometimes he'll suggest we go for a Happy Hour meal (two for the price of one) but we have to get in there before 5.30 p.m. - so it's a bit of a dash - but we always do it! Maybe Turkey will start doing special meal deals in Cesme? I hope so! Hubby balks at CHEAP prices - so he'll probably go giddy and have a faint if the prices are a SHOCKER!!!
I know..... I sound like such an old fart. And I am. I am a smelly, fat old fart. I think that's what attracted Hubby to me in the EGOTM Chatroom. He didn't want someone high maintenance! Heavens!
Back to you lot... don't know how some of you manage it. I was fortunate to be able to go over a few times a year - I just bunged the cost on my credit card. And I don't think I could have kept up a long distance relationship only seeing someone once or twice a year - ooops, I forgot again! Oz rushed off to North Cyprus for his vizzzzzza after my THIRD trip out to see him - why do I keep forgetting that?! I MUST be an OLD FART!
Hats off to those of you that do - and chins up...... if you get there in the end, it will be worth it. You'll be able to take your Turkish Hubby for a special meal deal in the Harvester in The Wirrall! Way-hay!
