So Christine Walkden's younger sister is asking a bunch of women based in the UK how many boats depart from Kusadasi to Samos each day?

And she's a teacher (supposedly) which I find really worrying - talk about dumbing down!

Erm, Jellybelly, have you tried asking down at the quay? tongue

Does anyone know, are there only 2 boats a day from Kusadasi to Samos? This is all I can find, we didn't really want to stay for a full day...

Onto the next sophisticated superbrain who has a boyfriend she has to burp (KittyKat) what's happened to the brand new sports car he wanted to buy her? Ideas anyone? cyclops

I've also noticed how she bangs on and on about babies - even though she's not even preggies - and she has her whole future planned out - inside her head. clown

She also complains about youths in her hometown in the UK - and I'm wondering where she originates from. Because I don't have filthy scumbags loitering at the end of my road..........

I actually feel quite sorry for Kittykat. I don't think she's down on England or the children here at all really, she's just trying hard to convince herself that Turkey is the place to be in light of her current predicament with the inability to go for a settlement visa. I'm sure if they could go for one, she'd be first in the queue applying for a settlement visa along with all the rest of them and you'd hear none of this sort of talk from her. She'd be looking forward to settling here just as much as they all do and she'd be merrily posting away with all her plans instead of posting stuff like this.

Part of her drive to convince herself that Turkey (and most specifically Maramaris) is the place to be seems to entail convincing herself that all English children are appallingly behaved, and have no respect and no manners. I don't know whereabouts in England she lives but I would imagine that for the most part she is getting her extremely jaundiced view of English children from the sample that she sees in her partner's restaurant - in Turkey! She acknowledges herself that Marmaris attracts the sort of British families who spawn such children and another member quite rightly ponted out to her that with that in mind, a resort like Marmaris might not be an ideal place to raise children. As it goes, I think that member has a very valid point too.

I'd suggest that somewhat ironically, by settling in Turkey, far from escaping the type of British children she so despairs of, Kittykat will encounter far more of them in Marmaris than she ever would if she lived in a decent area of England. Of course I've witnessed children tantruming, that happens everywhere the world over, but I see none of the behaviour she describes from children where we live. I have on the other hand seen plenty of low lives and their tribes traipsing around every Turkish resort I've ever been to over the years, behaving in exactly the manner she describes. I've witnessed some appalling behaviour from teenagers in Altinkum and Kusadasi.

Kittykat needs to accept the fact that 90% of Turkish holiday resorts are extremely down market and unfortunately it's a sad fact but for some unknown reason seem to attract the dregs of British society. It comes with the territory and she's been out there long enough by now to recognise that I'm sure. Settling in a hell hole like Marmaris is not a smart strategy for avoiding the elements of British society that she so badly wants to avoid in my view - quite the opposite in fact!

My husband spent so long in Altinkum that he too formed quite a jaundiced view of British people based solely on the small sample he encountered during the course of his working day. Thankfully when he came to live here and really started to integrate he saw that people were not all like them and he found it very refreshing. I'm glad he now has a balanced view of English people and he can see that there are good and bad people everywhere. He knows that many of the people he encounters here would not be seen dead holidaying in a place like Altinkum or Marmaris!

    Hi Judith,

I think KittyKat's obsession with detail, dates and planning is bordering on an OCD. It's OK to make plans, but things don't always go according to plans, and the way she seems to be planning her future in such incredible detail is really strange. She's done all research on schools and pre-schools in Marmaris (what time they open, finish, term times blah blah blah) she's not even pregnant yet! How does she know when she's going to fall pregnant? Suspect Some people can fall pregnant at the drop of a hat, but some people have terrible trouble falling pregnant - and as the saying goes - don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

She doesn't even know how her relationship's going to pan out. I don't think they can barely converse - and if he ever masters English - she may discover he's an idiot! Or he might find her incredibly boring and pushy! I bet she sits with him talking non-stop while he stares into space with that vacant glassy-eyed look people have who 'aren't quite with it'.

He has to be a numpty to think he was going to buy a brand new sports car in September! clown What a muppet! And she can't be much brighter to go along with his deluded daydreams. It's all stupid. And if a person did have £50k (cars are dead expensive in Turkey!) they could buy an apartment with that! She and he live in a complete and utter dreamworld by the sound of things.

You're right what you say, Judith. The only reason she's trying to convince herself that she wants to live in Turkey is because he can't speak English; in fact, I'm sure she once said he can't even read and write in Turkish. It's very sad, and it must be horrible for him, but those are the facts, and she realises it will be years (if at all) before he gets to the UK.

And as for the filthy, scumbag children she refers to - again, you're right. They all get taken to Marmaris and Altinkum. Respectable people with breeding would never in a million years find Marmaris, Icmeler or Altinkum appealing. Never. And that's why she sees these common-as-much scumbag types all around - cos she's living in the thick of it. I know she comes from somewhere in or around Birmingham - and going by what she said it sounds like she comes from the very rough part if she has scumbags loitering on street corners.

If she wants to better herself (and why not?!) what on earth is she doing with an illiterate, daydreaming Kurd - and in Marmaris at that!

From what she's said, to be fair Strawbs I think Kittykat's man can speak and understand English OK, it's just the reading and writing that's the problem.

It's quite a common occurance for a lot of Kurds/Turks who head off to resorts looking for work in restaurants and bars to just pick up English simply "by ear" listening to British customers talking until it sticks. That's why you often find a lot of them tend to develop slightly odd accents when they speak English and use a more colloquial way of speaking too because, for example, they may have a lot of Scottish or northern customers.

Some can pick up a lot and have the appearance of being quite fluent by doing that but of course they will never be able to read or write in English and will know nothing of grammar etc unless they learn the language properly.

I can remember going to Altinkum and seeing new young lads working in the same restaurants as my husband who couldn't speak a word of English. They were very shy and were just allowed to mill around in the background doing the dogsbody jobs, washing up in the kitchens and putting out the ashtrays etc. You'd go back the following year and you'd see how they'd come out of their shells and were able to hold a little converstion in English. You'd give them a few years and they'd be well away. I've seen little lads of 12 and 13 who are barely literate in Turkish be able to speak English quite fluently by the age of 17 or 18 just from picking up the language by ear. It's quite surprising, and quite impressive too!

Some are quick learners but I suppose this English test requirement for the settlement visa will mean that a lot of men who have learnt to speak English this way will come unstuck.

The tests are set to become tougher too I think from what I have read others say on TL so it will no doubt put a lot of couples in a difficult position I think.

    Hi Judith,

Oh well at least they can converse; I know she once said his English was poor, which I took to mean his speaking, but, of course, it's obviously his written English that's poor.

I know Ertie learnt English at school, which is probably why he could write it when I first met him. Actually, he has really lovely handwriting (kind of square shaped) - I don't know if that's the standard way of teaching handwriting in Turkey, but it's very clear and impressive-looking. Maybe schools differ from area to area out there? I'm sure they must.

I think you're right about couples coming unstuck with the new visa rules - they're so much stricter now - and there's more hoops to jump through. I wonder if this will mean Turks will start targeting Yanks more? I think their visa rules may be easier (though I can't be sure of that) and now that Turks are beginning to realise this isn't the land of milk and honey - and they all have access to the WWW (and all those Yankee women!) I think British women will start wondering if they've lost their looks............I don't think the rats will waste their time shouting out 'Hey beautiful!' when they know they're a Brit. lol
